Bitter
Building a Hole (1994)

Yeah I am enigma
I am the biggest lie
I don't know where to begin
Am I a figment
A figment in your mind
Why must I always impress this

It's all the same when you're two faced
It's even worse when the lie tastes good

You are a stigma
You sure ain't justified
Will you break me down
You are a pretense
You are so falsified
You're as fake as I am

It's all the same when you're two faced
It's even worse when the lie tastes good
And it's so good

You said you'd never go
And I saw you run
And I saw you hide
I'm looking back to now
And it's getting dark inside
I'm looking back in time
And I knew the words
The things you said
And I'm counting my reasons
To stay
No matter how close to me
You seem so far away
I'm in between
I'll just need
I need to let you go

We are a problem now
We are nothing
We are before we began
We are a love that's
Egocentricity
We don't need to know
We don't need to know or know nothing

It's all the same when you're two faced
It's even worse when the lie tastes good

And I just can't wait to see your face
It's a bitter hate that tastes so good
It's so good
But let's not be bitter now
I've just lied to myself

Mike Garrigan on "Bitter":

"Bitter" came to life at the Columbia Street Bakery Open Mic Nights that I used to participate in as a Freshman in college. This song would be performed well with a band. I always wanted to try it with Collapsis but we lacked the proficiency to pull it off. It’s a downright angry song. I love it for that reason. I was really upset when I wrote it, I remember. "Bitter" continues a lot of the issues I was dealing with in "Stay." I even emphasized that point in the bridge of the song. It’s a little reprise of sorts, I guess. When you hang on to someone for so long and it’s just dead weight, eventually you let go. You have to. I like the way "Bitter" frames the album with "Stay." I’ve tried to use that mentality with all of my records.
