You were looking inside to the passionate
Voices that were talking all around you
You were tasting more than was given
It’s hard to make decisions
"Shiver" is a song I wrote for another young lady with whom I was also smitten. Did I mention that all of these songs were about how I couldn't get a date? Anyway, this song is a nostalgic piece. If you've ever had the privilege of attending the Governor's Schools of North Carolina (East or West), you know that the experience exposes you to a number of motivated and dynamic people. You're all in the same place. Everyone's getting ready to go off to college in a year. You share the same experiences. You have meaningful discussions. You become the best of friends. New friendships begin. Some of them live on. Most of them don't. This song is about one of the one's that lived on, at least for a while. She was a dancer. We talked a lot about God...but in that collegiate, esoteric sense. You know, crystals, feelings and things of that nature. We were a whole year ahead of the "what does it all mean" discussions I would go on to hear on the balconies of Morrison Dorm. For me, this song is a window to the past. I hear it and I see the person I was and the people and things I surrounded myself with twelve years ago. I hear it and I'm glad that life has moved on. It's good to look back every now and then, though.
You were drying flowers on the paper
And I was reading postcards in the mail
You were sitting there in confusion
And I was walking barefoot in the house
I was seeing gray steps of your hand (?)
You were saying things you always new
I didn’t think you’d ever understand
While sitting there on Sunday afternoon
Dancing all along the heated causeway (?)
Looking back for August coming soon
And I was doing things that no one knew
You were saying time passed us by
And I was finding truth in your eyes
You were moving arms of contribution
And I was thinking payments I could bend (?)
You were thankful for this partial life
And I know it’s hard for you to understand
And still this makes movement to the heavens (?)
Here I am, please take my hand
